DNA & Cell Biology

Innovation Incubator(i2), Department of Zoology and Department of Bio-Technology of Nehru Memorial College organised lecturesby Dr. Karan Kaul an emeritus professor of Biology at the University of Kentucky, USA. Chairman M. Ponnambalam, President Pon. Balasubramanian, Principal T. Jeyaprakasam and Dean A. Prabaharan spoke on the occasion. J. Radhika, Principal of Srimad Andavan Arts and Science College chaired the lecture session. Students from various colleges of Trichy participated.

Dr. Karan Kaul in his lectures elaborated on the DNA structure and functions. Properties of the enzyme DNA polymearase, replication, opening of the double helix, formation of the primers, synthesis of new DNA were described by him in detail. He gave a detailed power point lecture why DNA replication always occurs in a 5 to 3 directions.

It included discussion of how the cells take care of replication and protection of the tips of chromosomes in eukaryotic cells, Historical account of some of the experimental work which lead to the proposal of DNA structure by Watson and Crick. A discussion of some of the features of structure of DNA.

Discussion of packaging of a large amount of DNA(about 2m of DNA per diploid human cell) in a very small space. Role of histones in DNA packaging in eukaryotic cells were explained by Karan Kaul.

Prof. M. P. Shanthi, Head of the Department of Zoology felicitated the guests.

N. Ramesh of the Department of Zoology proposed a vote of thanks.
