About the Department

The Department of Botany was established in the year 2015 affiliated to the Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu. The Department offers a B.Sc., Degree course in Botany. The department has to its credits several international and national paper publications. At present two research projects funded by UGC, DST organizations are being operated in the department. The importance of Botany has been realized in the last few years by many industries. The need of trained manpower in this area is on increase, we cater the needs of the industries. Eminent scientists from various premier educational / research institutes help the students with their expert guidance. Apart from this, the students are taught about recent advancements in Plant Tissue culture and Bioinformatics through internet facility and guest lectures regularly. The ultimate idea of our department is to encourage the students to come up with their innovative ideas to utilize our fully equipped laboratory for the betterment of the society through plant science ideas.


Plants are the foundation of all terrestrial communities and they dramatically affect the world's climate, the global cycles of nutrients and water, as well as the lives of animals. The knowledge of Botany can be applied for the benefit of human nutrition, health, and to improve the sustainability of agriculture. As the population of people on earth continues to explode, the need to produce more productive crops and more nutritious foods will depend on the talents of botanists. Microbiology is a diverse discipline with almost limitless applications in health, industry, biotechnology, environmental science and basic research. With the increase in emerging infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance, the threat of bioterrorism, the rapid advances in biotechnology and numerous environmental problems, microbiologists are in higher demand than ever. The Botanists can address the current environmental crisis and instill the spirit of stewardship in the minds of younger generation towards a sustainable future.


A degree in Botany will widen the career opportunity to enter many other fields in the scientific and business world. Job opportunities include: Environmental Managers, Park Rangers, Environmental Consultants, Environmental officers, Biotechnologists, Marine Botanists, Plant Anatomist, Ethnobotanists, Conservation Biologists, Ecotourism Entrepreneur, Grassland Scientist, Horticulturist, Taxonomists, Quality control officers, Microbiologists in clinical labs and many more.


On successful completion of our course (B.Sc., Botany), Students will be able to:
