Mr. Pon. Balasubramanian, the President of Nehru Memorial College Committee offered felicitations. He traced the significance of the term ‘Lyceum’ by referring to the famous Greek Philosopher Aristotle and his academy “The Lyceum.” Lyceum means a place or building devoted to literary studies, lectures, debates etc. He suggested the students to devote time for sharpening their verbal skill.
Prof.Dr. A Noel Joseph Irudayaraj, Formerly Head and Chairperson of School of English and Foreign Languages, Bharathidasan University was the Chief Guest. Dr Noel inaugurated the The Lyceum of NMC and delilvered a special lecture on Language for a Living and for Life.
In his Inaugural address Dr Noel expressed his deep concern for the extremely reductive or terribly limited view of both language learning and language teaching. He instructed the students to be aware of the diminished image of Language and its potentials and uses. He said that Language is a meal-card and language alone could rejuvenate and sustain the life of the mind and life of the spirit. In this connection he quoted the words of Bharathidasan who underscored this essential truth about the highest potential of language by describing ‘Tamil as not only honey but also as elixir.’ quoted He appealed to the students to view language learning not as an instrument for livelihood but as a life-long commitment in order to lead a better life at the cultural and ethical spheres.
Mr K T Tamilmani, Head of the Department of English proposed a vote of thanks and the meeting came to an end at 1.30 p.m.
